Time Keeps on Tickin'

Another month, another update...

Dear Grandma and Grandpa,

I'm so sorry I missed getting the update out yesterday. Audrey's on Spring Break from school this week, and I think that caused me to forget it was Monday! You guys weren't the only ones, I also forgot I had signed up to donate blood yesterday, until Jared came home and reminded me 2 hours after the appointment (and after the blood drive was over). Some days are like that, I guess!

We've had a fun month! I wish I could say, now that it's April, that we're getting out and enjoying the beautiful weather but, unfortunately, it's currently snowing! It's been snowing since October and I'm ready for winter to be over! We did have some nice weather yesterday, and the kids were able to play outside and I got some much-needed yardwork done. It's a never-ending project, but it feels good to make a little headway.

We've had so much fun seeing so many friends and family members this month. My friend from college, Rochelle, came to town for a math conference (she's a math teacher). She came a bit early, since she was on Spring Break, and we had a good time shopping, going out to eat, and getting together with other old college friends. She was also here during General Conference, and I don't know if it was having the extra adult around, the conference activity packet my dad sent, or just the kids growing up (or maybe a combo of all three), but the kids were angels during conference! In the past, I've had a hard time getting them even to just play quietly on their own so I could listen, let alone having them sit reverently and listen to the messages, but this time they did great! They did go and play for awhile, but Audrey, especially, really enjoyed the conference bingo, cutting out the pictures of the prophets, and coloring the ties of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve as they spoke (all activities in the packet my dad emailed me). She participated in the solemn assembly, sat quietly through most of the sessions (listening for bingo words) and listened especially attentively to President Monson and the part of Elder Ballard's talk that he addressed to the children. I was very pleasantly surprised with the understanding and reverence she seemed to show for General Conference this year. Adam wasn't quite as attentive, but he did cooperate by sleeping through the afternoon session both days!

While Rochelle was in town, we also had a lot of Jared's family in town for Jared's grandfather's funeral. He passed away a few weeks ago, and the funeral was held the Thursday before conference. There were many associated family activities, since there were family members here that we hadn't seen in years - some I had never met before. I wish I'd been able to attend more (I pretty much was just able to attend the funeral, as Rochelle was in town the same time), but Jared and the kids got to spend lots of time visiting with some of the extended family, which they really enjoyed.

Easter was a lot of fun, too. We had an egg hunt and potluck lunch with Jared's family on Saturday, then got together with the Scotts on Sunday for another egg hunt and a delicious dinner, complete with German Potato Salad. I think Mom makes it better each year! The kids were egg-hunting pros by the time the weekend was over, and we all enjoyed the chance to get together and visit with the family.

We went and registered Audrey for Kindergarten last week. I think she's a little more excited now that she's seen the school, met the teacher, etc. She seemed a lot less fearful and a lot more enthusiastic when I asked her about school after registration. I'm glad. She's really excited to have the afternoon schedule (she's quite the night owl and loves sleeping in), but is still uncertain about the uniforms (something I'm actually thrilled about). Her teacher seems really nice and we've been given some 'homework' to work on over the summer so she's prepared when school starts in the fall. It's hard to believe she'll be in Kindergarten! She's starting to read just a little bit, both by sounding out words and recognizing a handful of 'sight words', which is pretty exciting.

Adam is still busy and into whatever he can find. He hasn't slept in his crib for months, but we finally got around to taking it down, and I bought bedding for him for the full-size bed that was previously our guest bed (we have so few guests now that most of Jared's family has moved up here, that he'll just move to the trundle of Audrey's bed if we need a place for guests to stay). He loves his new monkey bed and his big-boy room. I'm still working on it, though - I have a flower painting on the wall I need to take down and replace with something masculine, and Audrey's princess tent is still up in there. He doesn't seem to mind. He's also excited about starting school in the fall, but if he doesn't become a little more eager to use the potty, that may not be happening! He still loves trucks, especially those of the construction variety. We got him a book called 'Dig, Dig, Digging' that he absolutely loves. We read it to him several times a day and he almost has it memorized. Each page talks about a different truck and then ends, 'They can work all day.' He repeats that line with gusto each time it comes up in the book. He was tired and had a tantrum in the store last week, and it reminded me how lucky I am that, in general, he's very easygoing. The tantrum was a rare event; he's usually very mellow and compliant (I still suspect someone may have snuck in during the night and switched him with another baby around his first birthday, since he was such a high-strung infant!).

We're looking forward to some fun activities with friends this week, since the kids are on Spring Break. We also may meet Mom and Michelle at the Thanksgiving Point Gardens for the tulip festival on Fridays. We generally get together with Mom on Fridays, since that's her day off, and we all enjoy having that as a 'Grandma Day.' So, we have a fun week lined up. Hope that you guys have a great week, as well. We love you so much and wish we had the opportunity to see you more often. Can't wait for Laura's wedding this summer!

Love,
Jenny and family
