Techno-Dummy Strikes Again

So, I'm trying out a new background. I'm so glad - the green dots were REALLY starting to irritate me. The OCD part of me wouldn't let me change it until the end of the month, though, since I initially set that template for the month of March, in honor of St. Patrick's Day. Guess it was my way of enduring to the end. Anyhow, I've got this new background, for spring (though it's absent here), which I really like, but I don't know how to put any elements on. When I go to "customize" it says I have to upgrade my template, and I'll lose my existing one. Am I doing something wrong here, or is this template just wonky and I need to switch to a new one? Any of you techno-philes out there know?
