Like Father, Like Daughter

Jared has a story he loves to tell to illustrate just how poor they were growing up. He claims they NEVER, EVER got treats when they were kids. So, they were on a family trip, driving of course, and apparently it was a Monday, because, when they stopped for gas, Jared talked his parents into buying a bag of jelly beans because they had to have a family home evening treat. Shortly after the bag was opened, the car slid off the road and into a ditch. Jelly beans went everywhere, and were trampled into the floor of the car. Jared loves to recount how, later, he went back and gathered every single jelly bean - even the ones that were smashed in the fuzzy car carpet, because he was NOT missing out on this evidently once-in-a-lifetime treat.

Well, my kids get treats a little more often than once in a lifetime - even more often than just on Monday nights. However, Audrey still gets pretty possessive of her sugar. I took the kids grocery shopping last night and bought them each a bottle of flavored milk as a treat. Audrey chose banana, and Adam chose chocolate. Adam drank his in the store, but Audrey was saving hers for this morning. When Adam saw Audrey drinking her milk this morning, he decided he wanted some, too, and went for the bottle, and tipped it, spilling some on the table. Rather than just drinking what was left in the bottle and wiping up the spill, Audrey insisted on lapping the extra from the table, and then getting a straw to finish off the job. Adam got in on the action, too:
It totally reminded me of hearing Jared tell of picking jelly beans out of the car carpet - not a one could be missed! What can I say, we're dedicated to our sweets!
